Introduction

My name is John Robb and my goal in the next ten years is to become the first person to hike all 11 national scenic trails and to do so for the benefit of others who are in need.

I started my mission in 2008 by hiking the appalachian trail. I did so for the benefit of Gilda's Club of north Texas. During the 8 plus months that it took me to hike the AT i managed to raise over $27,000. You can read about this hike as well as view photos by clicking the appalachian trail tab.

When I started in march of '08 there were 8 national scenic trails, but in march of '09 the current white house administration signed into law 3 additional trails (arizona, pacific northwest and the new england trail).

My next hike will start in mid October of this year. It will consist of two trails, the first of which will be the Natchez Trace Parkway (444 miles) followed immediately by the Lone Star Trail (128 miles). The LST is not one of the 11 national scenic trails, but it is the only long distance trail in texas.

For this hike I will have the pleasure of raising money for the Be An Angel charity of Houston, TX. Be An Angel helps children with multiple disabilities and profound deafness, and is a worthy cause. You can learn more about this charity by clicking the the tab above and/or by clicking the "be an angel" link.

How It Works

As was the case with my Appalachian Trail hike(and all subsequent hikes),100% of the money I raise goes directly to the charity. I do not touch the money, and pay for all my expenses out of pocket.

You will be donating/pledging directly to the Be An Angel charity. Details on how you can pledge or donate can found by clicking on the donate/pledge tab above. I will be sending updates/progress reports every one or two days depending on cell phone reception. Photos will be updated when and I can get to a computer.

About This Hike

This hike will be markedly different than my appalachian trail hike.on the positive side I will not have constant elevation changes (hiking the AT is the equivalent of climbing and descending Mt. Everest 29 times). These trails are basically flat. On this hike I will be hiking solo. According to the chief ranger for the Natchez Trace Parkway he is unaware of anybody ever hiking it end to end. What this means is that I will not have other hikers to depend on if needed. I will also miss out on the camaraderie that is an integral part of the AT. Water will be a major issue on both trails. I will have to cache water on both and hope that when I get to a stash, its still there.

In fact, I will have to hike a significant portion of the Lone Star Trail in order to cache water before starting.

Finally there is the physical aspect. Every mile will be an adventure for a 50 year old diabetic who has had 12 surgeries including 5 knee,2 neck,1 elbow, and both shoulders.

Please check back often as I will post updates before starting, including an exact start date, the targeted dates right now are in between October 15-18.

Wish me luck,
John Robb (aka Bad Wheels)
